Alain Thierstein studierte von 1978 bis 1984 Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der Universität St.Gallen. Nach dem Doktorat 1987 war Thierstein tätig als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität St.Gallen. Ab 1993 war er Ständiger Dozent für Regionalökonomie sowie ab Juli 1998 Leiter des Kompetenzbereiches Regional-wirtschaft am Institut für Öffentliche Dienstleistungen und Tourismus. 2000 wurde er als Associate Professor für Raumordnung ans Institut für Orts-, Regional- und Landesplanung (ORL-Institut) der ETH Zürich berufen. Seit Anfang 2005 arbeitet Alain Thierstein als ordentlicher Professor für Raumentwicklung im Departement Architektur der Technischen Universität München. Dazu wirkte er bis 2022 als Partner bei EBP Schweiz AG in Zürich.
Alain Thierstein, Dr. oec. HSG, is a full professor for urban development at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), School of Engineering and Design, Department of Architecture. He also is affiliated with the consultancy of EBP Schweiz AG, Zurich, as partner and senior consultant in urban and regional economic development. He received his master’s degree as well as his doctoral degree in economics from the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Alain Thierstein is involved in research on urban and metropolitan development; spatial impact of the knowledge economy, in particular the localized networks of firm relationships; the spatial interaction of locational choice of residence, work and mobility; the spatio-functional interaction of rail infrastructure and urban development; the role of star architecture for repositioning small and medium sized cities.
