Wolfgang Nellen war bis 2015 Prof. für Genetik an der Univ. Kassel und arbeitete an Regulationsmechanismen durch kleine RNAs, z.B. der Regulation von Transposons. 1996 gründete er Science Bridge e.V., wo er sich bis heute für Wissenschaftskommunikation in Schule und Gesellschaft engagiert. Schwerpunkte sind molekularbiologische Methoden wie CRISPR-Cas, mRNA-Impfstoff und transgene Organismen sowie andere Themen der modernen Biologie. Für Science Bridge hat er Vorträgen, Seminaren und Laborkurse für jedermann entwickelt. Dabei diskutiert er, neben den wissenschaftlichen Grundlagen, auch gesellschaftliche und ethische Aspekte der Anwendung.
Er war Präsident der Ges. für Genetik und des Biologenverbands VBIO. Seit 2020 ist er Editor-in-Chief der Zeitschrift „Biologie in unserer Zeit“.
Wolfgang Nellen was professor for genetics at Kassel University until 2015. He worked on regulatory mechanisms by small RNAs, e.g. the “domestication” of transposons. 1996 he founded “Science Bridge”, an association dedicated to science communication for schools and the general public. He developed presentations, seminars and lab courses on CRISPR-Cas, transgenic organisms and mRNA vaccines tailor-made for different interest groups and different levels of education. He has a specific interest to not only communicate the scientific basis but also societal and ethical implications of molecular biology.
Wolfgang Nellen was president of the German Genetics Society (GfG) and the German Biologists Society (VBIO). He is editor-in-chief of the Bio-Magazine BiuZ.
